An aviation pioneer Samuel P. Langley on an airmail stamp
Samuel Pierpont Langley (1834 – 1906) was an American astronomer, physicist, inventor of the bolometer and pioneer of aviation. Samuel P. Langley almost succeeded with inventing the airplane before the Wright brothers. Langley made model airplanes powered by whirling arms and steam engines. He built a unmanned model of an airplane that included a steam-powered engine. In 1891, Samuels model flew for 3/4 of a mile before running out of fuel.

Arvo Ylppö (1887 – 1992) was a Finnish pediatrician who decreased Finnish infant mortality during the 20th century. He is credited as the father of Finland's public child welfare clinic system.

Astronomy is the subject of two Europa stamps, issued in May 2009 in Finland.
In the pair of stamps you can see a beautiful landscape of lakes, flying birds and different heavenly bodies. The left-hand stamp has the Moon and the Milky Way in the centre. The stamp on the right you can see a comet on its left side, accompanied by a lunar eclipse and the large planet shown on the stamp is Saturn.
