An aviation pioneer Samuel P. Langley on an airmail stamp

A stamp printed in USA shows aviation pioneer Samuel P Langley and his Aerodrome No 5 machine, 1988.

Samuel Pierpont Langley (1834 – 1906) was an American astronomer, physicist, inventor of the bolometer and pioneer of aviation. Samuel P. Langley almost succeeded with inventing the airplane before the Wright brothers. Langley made model airplanes powered by whirling arms and steam engines. He built a unmanned model of an airplane that included a steam-powered engine. In 1891, Samuels model flew for 3/4 of a mile before running out of fuel.
